Submission Guidelines

The submission period for the Spring 2025 edition of Plum has closed.  Thank you to those who submitted! The next window for submissions will open in early 2026.

At Plum, we look for writing that is authentic and has a clear voice, writing that pulls us in and takes us places, writing that engages our senses and emotions. We accept submissions* of poetry, fiction, nonfiction and art  which will be published online and in print.

Greenfield Community College students, employees and alums, as well as writers and artists from our region who are not affiliated with GCC are welcome to submit. The work of new, emerging, and established writers will be considered. We embrace a wide variety of writing, though we don’t publish anything that violates the mission of GCC.

We seek original, unpublished work and will only consider work that is copyright-free, self-published or published on personal social media or in a local newspaper or publication with limited, non-national distribution. All rights revert to the author upon publication in Plum.

If you have multiple pieces of work to submit, please create separate files for each one. For example, if you submit three poems, put each poem in its own file and upload the three poems separately. Poems should be no more than 50 lines, short fiction and non-fiction no more than 3,000 words—though the editors may determine that longer works can be published in the online version of Plum.

Do not include your name on your submission or in your document file name. We keep submissions anonymous until decisions regarding publication have been made. In addition to your submission, you must provide your name, contact information, title of the work, connection to GCC and/or the region and an optional two-sentence bio; this information will be filed separately from your submission.

For written submissions, use a standard font such as Arial or Times New Roman—ideally 12 pt and no smaller than 10 pt.

* Note that we define the categories of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction broadly. For example, song lyrics fall in the category of poetry; memoir comes under nonfiction; and one-act plays can be classified as fiction. Short videos, songs, and computer-based creations will be considered as well. When in doubt, make your best choice regarding which category to select when submitting your creative work!
