Government Relations

The Government Relations Office at Greenfield Community College represents the needs of the College and its students to both state and federal policy makers. GCC maintains close ties to its state and federal elected representatives, working collaboratively to help advance the strategic priorities of the College.

When GCC employees are acting on behalf of the college (or their respective academic or student services programs) it is appropriate to notify and coordinate with the Director of Government Relations first before reaching out to any of the College’s state and/or federal legislative delegation members.

This is so the Office of Government Relations can coordinate outreaches to the various legislators and avoid confusion on their end when they receive multiple emails from different areas of the college, whether it's competing event invitations or requests for advocacy on behalf of the college. Our current state legislators in particular are devoted advocates for GCC and higher education, and coordinating these outreaches with me will help ensure that they can arrange their schedules to support GCC's programming in the best ways possible.

***Note on individual and/or union advocacy: These guidelines pertain only to when GCC employees are representing the College in an official capacity, not when they are acting as private individuals or as representatives of MCCC or AFSCME or any other affiliation they may have.

Examples

✓ Notify Office of Government Relations: If a faculty department chair is reaching out to invite state legislators to the campus for a Q and A panel as part of a class, the Director of Government Relations should be notified of that beforehand so that other events or requests to legislators that may be in motion can be coordinated and scheduled in relation to that.

❌ Do Not Notify Office of Government Relations: A GCC employee engaging with or seeking advocacy from any elected official in any way when they are representing their own or union business/interests is NOT asked or expected to notify the Director of Government Relations or any other GCC employee beforehand. Any effort as an active GCCPA leader and MTA Board member representing MCCC unit members across the state, or any outreach a GCC employee would engage in as a private citizen, would not pertain to the above guidelines in any way.
