On Wednesday, Nov. 8, meet the man who threw Tom Hanks out of a baseball game on the big screen and celebrate Greenfield Community College's latest theater production.

Join GCC as we kick off the fall theater production of "Angels in America" with "Life Behind the Lens: 40 Years in the Movie Industry" with Mike Haley, a Hollywood veteran who was a key part of the HBO production of the award-winning television film version of the play. 

Haley will host his talk at GCC on Wednesday, Nov. 8, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., in Room C208, and will recount stories from his career in the movie industry. Haley's Emmy award-winning career includes work on over 60 feature films and 18 television movies and collaborations with directors including Penny Marshall, Harold Ramis, Sidney Lumet, Sidney Pollock and Barry Levinson.

"GCC is honored to have Mr. Haley speak to the GCC community on the heels of our local production of "Angels in America," said GCC President Michelle Schutt. "It is incredible to have the opportunity to connect with one of the assistant directors from this groundbreaking HBO series."  

"As a member of the first class of the first community college in Massachusetts, I know how important community colleges are. It was the launching point of an adventure beyond my wildest imaginations and I'm excited to share that story with the wonderful GCC community," Haley said. 

Haley's resume also includes on-camera work, like his role as the umpire who throws Tom Hanks out of the game after the classic "There's no crying in baseball!" scene in "A League Of Their Own."

Haley and his wife Joan are significant supporters of GCC's mission and the work of the college's students. Their contributions have given the college the opportunity to purchase student artwork for display across campus. They have also established the Daniel J. Haley Scholarship for GCC students planning to pursue any kind of an engineering degree at UMass.

Following Haley's appearance at GCC, the college's theater department will kick off their production of "Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches" for the public on Friday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Sloan Theater. 

Directed by GCC Theater Faculty Tom Geha, "Angels in America," Part One tells the story of Louis and Prior and Harper and Joe, two couples whose relationships are on the rocks; the former because of Prior's AIDS diagnosis and Louis' inability to cope with illness, and the latter because of Joe's closeted homosexuality and Harper's incessant fears and hallucinations.

"This production has pushed all of our limits as creators so we can put on the best possible show," GCC student and cast member Tahmie Der said. 

"This play has been a wonderful return to the community for me and an exciting, though challenging, process of getting to know my character," Ben Kimmel, GCC student and cast member, said.
