Sam Walsh, Environmental Conservation major and Geology Museum intern: "Getting to try something new and work with such beautiful minerals has been such a fun experience. I`ve learned a ton—everything from how minerals form and what makes them unique, to where different specimens come from. Plus, organizing collections and creating displays has given me hands-on experience in museum work. I loved being able to revamp the displays and really highlight the beauty of the minerals."

Our students` stories inspire us everyday, so here`s a spotlight on Mike Hannigan, Student Senate President and former GCC Student Trustee, who recently shared his transformative journey from a place of personal struggle to becoming a dedicated community leader.

Less than two years ago, Mike Hannigan moved to Greenfield at what he described as a "low point" in life. He signed up for a volunteer shift at Stone Soup Café while enrolling in three classes at GCC through the MassReconnect program.

“What I was missing was a connection to community and the opportunity to be involved in something bigger than myself,” he says. “Stone Soup Café and Greenfield Community College provided that for me. They changed my life.”

Since then, Mike has embraced a passion for food justice and service. An internship at Stone Soup Café introduced him to the principles of permaculture and the impact of community service. He became involved with gleaning produce for local distribution with Rachel’s Table, and now leads GCC’s Permaculture Club, expanding access to fresh food for students on campus.

Mike’s story is a reminder of how connection, purpose, and community can change everything.

Congratulations to our incredible GCC student, Mary Brouder, on completing a transformative 12-week internship at Sisson Accounting Services! Mary`s dedication and hard work have paid off—gaining hands-on experience with QuickBooks, Excel and tax software like Lacerte, while building confidence in client interactions. Starting with just one accounting course, she`s grown into a skilled professional, applying key concepts like depreciation and payroll taxes in real-world settings.

Her passion for accounting, especially tax prep, is stronger than ever, and she`s now planning to pursue a master’s degree at UMass Amherst to reach her long-term goals.

She thanks Professor Jeffrey Galbraith and Internship Coordinator David Brown for guiding her towards a bright future as a CPA! We couldn’t be prouder of your accomplishments, Mary! See the full story using the link in our bio.

Closing out Nurses Week we have Rebecca Wolf, an instructor in our Practical Nursing program who told us why this career path and program at GCC are so important:

"For me, choosing a career in nursing was about making a difference every single day. It`s an honor to be trusted with people’s lives, their hopes and their fears. Every time I step into a patient`s room I have the opportunity to bring not just knowledge and skill but also compassion, dignity and hope. Being a nurse means living a life of service, leadership and lifelong learning.

Reflecting on my experience at Greenfield Community College, I can say it was rigorous, and that’s how I knew I was getting a great education and being thoroughly prepared for the real world of nursing.

For years, GCC has held a reputation for creating amazing nurses for our community. Every time someone asks where I went to nursing school and I say "GCC" I can see that it means something to them. I am proud to be an alum and now I get to pass on my own knowledge to students in the very same classrooms I was in.

Personally, being a nurse has shaped every part of who I am. It has taught me resilience, empathy, and the power of human connection. Now, as a nursing professor, my role is to pass those lessons forward — to inspire the next generation to not only be clinically excellent but also to be kind, courageous, and ethically grounded.

Watching students grow into compassionate, competent nurses reminds me daily why I chose this path — and why I would choose it all over again."

Thank you again to all our nurses, nursing teachers, and soon-to-be nurses!

Spring Week at GCC was a vibrant success—made even better by the gorgeous weather! The week kicked off with a sustainable twist as students learned how to mend clothes instead of tossing them, thanks to Swanson’s Fabrics Stash House. Tuesday brought a hands-on Garden Clean Up in the Outdoor Learning Lab to prep for planting season. On Wednesday, students enjoyed Field Day with games, a food truck and a Labyrinth Clean Up to help restore this peaceful campus space. Thursday wrapped things up with Bike Day in celebration of Bay State Bike Month, featuring helpful info and bike maintenance tips from FRCOG and MassBike, plus live music from the GCC Beatles and Radiohead Ensemble. Big thanks to everyone who joined the fun and helped make Spring Week so special!

Our seed library has been rebranded as Hope’s Seed Library in honor of longtime librarian Hope Schneider, celebrating 10 years of community engagement and sustainability.

We're featuring a new logo and expanded offerings, including seeds collected from GCC gardens. While you’re not required to return seeds, we encourage you to bring back seeds from your own plants to help the library thrive!

Recently, we kicked off the season with a vibrant plant swap, bringing together students and community members to exchange plants and share gardening tips.
