<\/span>Peer Mentors<\/div>

Peer Mentors<\/strong> provide individual support to students, primarily by email and text (through a secure messaging app), but also 1-on-1 as needed over Zoom or in-person\u2014as well as help with program development and planning events and activities that support students’ sense of community and belonging.<\/p>\n

Required Qualifications:<\/strong> A matriculated student (enrolled in a major or certificate program) or a dual enrollment student, who has completed two (2) consecutive semesters OR 12 credits at GCC and is in good academic and disciplinary standing at the time of application.<\/p>\n

Expectations:<\/strong> Must be prepared to dedicate an average of 3-5 hours\/week to the program throughout the semester, including some group meetings and some independent work. Remote participation is available for most work hours, and many hours are at flexible times (but some on-campus work and pre-scheduled meetings are required). Position begins with four mandatory trainings on Friday afternoons in January.<\/p>\n

Orientation Leaders (OLs)<\/strong> play a vital role in introducing new students to GCC and helping them feel connected. In response to last semester’s Orientations, new students repeatedly mentioned how welcomed they felt in Orientation, how helpful the OLs were and how their Orientation experience left them feeling less anxious and better prepared to start the semester.<\/p>\n
During virtual GCC101 and Secrets to Success sessions, OLs connect with students in the chat, answer questions, talk about resources and facilitate brief break-out sessions encouraging new students to interact with each other. (OLs can specify virtual or in-person or both.)<\/p>\n
For in-person sessions, you will lead group discussions (don’t worry\u2014we’ll give you questions and prompts to use), take groups of students on tours of the campus and, like in the virtual sessions, answer questions, talk about resources and discuss your own GCC experiences.<\/p>\n
In addition to virtual and in-person GCC101, we will also offer peer-supported Moodle practice sessions online and stand-alone tours with icebreakers, so that students who have done Orientation online will still get a chance to see the campus and meet some folks in person.<\/p>\n

Eligibility:<\/strong> Any degree-seeking or dual enrollment student who has been taking classes one semester or more (minimum of six credits completed).<\/p>\n
Expectations:<\/strong> 10-12 hours\/week right before and into the start of the semester. The majority of these hours will be in pre-scheduled 2-3 hour shifts. Some shifts are in the evening hours (not after 8 p.m.).<\/p>\n

No interview required!<\/strong><\/p>\n
New Student Guides (NSGs)<\/strong> greet people arriving in the main building and make sure they know where they are trying to go. They are encouraged to walk with new students to their destination\u2014time and traffic permitting\u2014making small talk and pointing out spots of interest along the way!<\/p>\n
Qualifications:<\/strong> Any friendly student with familiarity with the campus can apply to be a New Student Guide!<\/p>\n
Expectations:<\/strong> Student Guides will be scheduled between 8 a.m.\u20133 p.m. starting the week prior to the beginning of classes, through the first week of classes of the semester. Must be prepared to work 4-12 hours\/week during these dates, in daytime shifts of 3-4 hours, in addition to any OL shifts.<\/p>\n
